Guest Speaker: Hina Shamsi, Director of the American Civil Liberties Union National Security Project
Please Join us on Wednesday 21 June from 17:30 for the Third Annual Lecture of the Human Rights Centre
which will take place at Allen & Overy, our partner for this event.
The evening will commence from 17:45 with a welcome from Allen & Overy and Dr Clara Sandoval (Acting Director of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex) followed by a keynote speech by Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU National Security project.
After the lecture the speaker will take questions and a drinks reception will take place 19:00 - 20:00
Hina Shamsi is the director of the ACLU National Security Project, which is dedicated to ensuring that U.S national security policies and practices are consistent with the Constitution, civil liberties, and human rights.
Hina engages in litigation, research, and policy advocacy on issues including the freedoms of speech and association, targeted killing, torture, unlawful detention, privacy and surveilance, and discrimination against racial and religious minorities. Her work includes a focus on the intersection of national security and counterterrorism policies and international human rights and humanitarian law.
Hina's previous positions include serving as the Director of Human Rights First's Law & Security Program, and as a senior Advisor to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions. She is the author and coauthor of publications on targetted killing, torture, extraordinary rendition, and privacy and surveillance, and has monitored the military commissions at Guantanamo Bay. She is also a Lecture-in-Law at Columbia Law School.
