Morcambe Station was built by the Midland Railway Company and first opened its doors to passengers on 24th March 1907. It was built with four main platforms and a siding to cater for the boosting tourist trade in the area and the many visitors it brought along with workers to the new state of the art Port.
When it was opened Midland Railway, controversially, tried to segregate the 1st and 2nd Class passengers into separate waiting rooms, failing miserably when passengers chose to stand along the concourse instead.
The station was electrified in 1908, with overhead lines installed to power the new, more reliable electric trains. 1923 saw the station come under the ownership of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, who changed the name of the station to Morcambe Promenade in 1924. British Railways took over the station in 1948 after the nationalisation of the UK railway network.
By the late 80’s, tourism in the area was rapidly declining and the local authorities decided that the train station was too big for the amount of services that ran through it. A new station was built closer to town and Morcambe Station was officially closed on 7th February 1994. In 1997 the building became an entertainment venue and has been sympathetically restored to its original Midland Railway condition.
