PLEASE READ (LOTS OF QUESTIONS ANSWERED BELOW)
The Rucksack Project Barnsley is a voluntary movement that revolves around a simple, but compassionate task to help those that are sleeping rough, or in desperate need, through the cold winter months.
It's not about grand gestures, and it's not about donating
lots of money or making a big commitment. It's about giving up a little of your time, the odd old or unused belonging, to help somebody who has fallen on hard times, and then encouraging others to do the same.
The concept is so simple - get a rucksack and fill it with some items that will help to make winter a little more comfortable for someone who is sleeping rough this winter, these include:
A sleeping bag
A fleece or warm coat
Some thick socks and clean (unused) underwear
Gloves and a wooly hat
Some non-perishable food, such as cans of soup (with ring pulls) and cereal bars
A thermos flask and a spoon
(please leave the thermos flask empty as we will fill them up with hot soup on the day as people come to collect them)
You may have things around your home that you no longer need or use. Ask you friends, family and neighbours if they have a few things too. You might also be able to find some bargains in charity shops, and pound stores.
Once you have enough things for a whole rucksack get them packed up. Then fill in one of our “Dear Police Officer” slips (to show what is being donated) and pop in the top of your rucksack.
We’d love you to print out one of our “We Are The Rucksack Project” posters and get some photos or videos of you and your donations up on this page and your own Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to help spread the word and encourage others to get on board.
On SATURDAY 23RD DECEMBER at 1PM please come along, with any and all belongings you wish to donate, to the BARNSLEY CHURCHES DROP IN PROJECT (Lower Ground Floor, Temperance House, Pitt Street S70 1AL - nr main Post Office, map available on this event page) at our BIG handout, where you can be a BIG part of getting packs of donations to someone who is truly in need of your help.
If you can't attend on this date, you are welcome to bring donations down to one of our drop-off points before Friday 22nd December so that packs can be put together and handed out on your behalf.
You will find the ‘Dear Police Officer’ slip and ‘Rucksack Contents Guide’ in the posts on this event page, and our main facebook page, along with quick do's and don'ts guide, graphics to use on your Facebook and Twitter pages, posters for you to print etc.
PLEASE spread the word – get your friends and family involved, share this on your Facebook/Twitter and invite people to this official event page. Facebook and Twitter are great ways to spread the message far and wide, so please tell your FB/Twitter friends what you're doing and why. Tell your community and sports groups about it, if you've got kids, see if you can get the school involved. AND let us know what great things you, your family and your friends are doing.
This is now our fifth year of the project running in Barnsley and we have had an incredible response every single year. Whilst there is an overwhelming wave of positivity throughout the project and as a whole most people have a great experience, please keep in mind that this is all 100% volunteer run, and everybody involved in the project has regular work and family commitments. Plus, it’s a huge unknown. Right up until the actual day we have absolutely no idea how big the response will be - we could be drowning in donations, or desperately searching through to make up enough packs for everybody who needs one. This does mean that there are elements of the project that are very much dealt with on the fly, and we can find ourselves very stretched because of this. But however stretched we are, if we don’t get to say thank you to everybody that drops something off, comes along to the handout, or assists in anyway, please know that we do very much appreciate your help, and the project simply wouldn’t exist without you, so THANK YOU.
You will find lots of information about the project and the handout event on this page including useful "factsheets" (e.g. do's and don'ts) and I will do our best to answer any additional questions.
Here is a short film, which may provide a greater background to the project -
Many thanks for your interest in, and support for, the project and I look forward to meeting many of you on the 23rd.
