ISIS, imperialism and the war on terror - NEWCASTLE event

The Paris attacks were used by the Western powers to justify an escalation of the failed 'war on terror', now entering it's 15th year. But revamped war, curtailment of civil liberties and intensified racism against Muslims will not bring peace.

Like after 9/11 & 7/7, the left and the anti-war movement

have responded by mobilising opposition to further war. Nonetheless David Cameron, aided by right wing Labour MPs, pushed ahead with getting a Commons mandate for a new wave of air strikes on Syria.

We will be discussing how the horrific, violent jihadism of ISIS has been fuelled by Western 'interventions', especially in Iraq, and how a new cycle of violence will only deepen the chaos and mess. There will be plenty of time for discussion about the issues.
