The race is one of the oldest in the UK and 25th in the Association of Road Racing Statisticians (ARRS) list of longest running marathons in the world, see http://www.arrs.net/LongRunM.htm, and click on 'Isle of Wight' for the list of winners
and times. Many of the races above the Isle of Wight don't have winners listed for particular years.
The Inaugural event in 1957 was won by Ken Honney (Walton A.C.) in 2:35:51.
In 1964 Dale Greig (SCO) set a women’s world record (recognised by ARRS, see http://www.arrs.net/RecProg/RP_wwR.htm) of 3:27:25 and was the first woman in the world to run under 3:30:00.
In 1976 the race was officially opened to women with the Inaugural event won by A Lewis (Bromsgrove & Redditch A.C.) in 3:21:06.
In 1978 the race hosted the inaugural UK Women’s Marathon Championship.

In 2013 the course was changed to the more traffic free West of the Island with the Race HQ based in Cowes.
The new course records are:
Men - Peter Thompson (Bournemouth A.C.) - 2:40:29
Women - Sarah Hill (Farnham Runners) - 3:00:31
Awards for breaking records are £50 for the overall record and £25 for a veteran record.
